I've got a mega cold at the moment so I've spent my Easter weekend lounging around, watching movies and eating everything in sight. Today Robin and I watched literally the best film ever, aka Legally Blonde. I don't know quite what it is about this movie, but I always enjoy it immensely and it never fails to cheer me up. In my opinion, it's up there with the very greatest of chick flicks; a definite for all sleepovers and girly film nights. I find it quite a refreshing and empowering narrative, as it - unusually - manages to celebrate traditional feminine traits, and presents a female protagonist who does not have to 'overcome' her femininity in order to achieve academic/career success. Basically, Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) is just really cool: she's pink and glittery and girly, and a kick-ass super intelligent lawyer. Anyway, I'm sure you've all seen it and don't need a recap!

The aesthetics of this film are pretty much exactly how I remember the majority of the 90s and the early 2000s - everything had fluff, glitter or sequins stuck all over it, and all girls seemed to have massive collections of Lip Smackers lip balm and 'funky' (everything in the 90s was funky) hair-slides and scrunchies from Claire's Accessories. I remember having a room decorated in lilac, with a purple fur bedspread and shiny silver star shaped cushions. I also had the exact same fluffy pink tissue box holder that Elle Woods has in her Harvard dorm room (scroll down), a white fluffy rug AND a blow up white fluffy RABBIT SHAPED pouffe. I also had one of these blow up backpacks (in blue), which was super awesome... The 90s are undergoing a real sartorial revival at the moment, which - I'll be honest - I never thought would happen. I suppose it's inevitable though, as every era has it's time in the spotlight again. Fortunately I have minimal desire to revisit my youth in a clothing sense (it's all still too raw, lol), but that doesn't stop me from appreciating some of the wicked ensembles rocked by Elle.

I seriously enjoy wiling away the hours re-watching a movie I have literally just watched so that I can pause it every four seconds and take a screen shot, so that's what I did. I went a bit screen-shot crazy and took LOADS, so - as not to bombard you with them all at once on my main page - you can find the rest after the jump...

Ahhh, she's so awesome! I need more pink things in my life... I also took loads of screen shots of Veronica (Selma Blair's character) so you can probably expect another Legally Blonde themed style inspiration post within the next couple of days. I'm going to stop writing now because I'm mildly aware that I'm rambling in an "I've had too much paracetamol and too little sleep and my throat feels like I've swallowed a ball of barbed wire" kind of way. I wanted to say loads of smart stuff about this film (I had tons of smart thoughts when I was watching it, I swear) but for now my brain is too mushy with flu to translate them into written words. Hopefully I'll feel better tomorrow. Ciao for now!

P.S. Happy Easter to you all! I hope you all ate loads of chocolate - remember, chocolate formed into cute bunny shapes contains zero calories...

  1. Okay, I'm probably the one girl who grew up during the '90s and DIDN'T see Legally Blonde, so now you've inspired me to hunt it up on NetFlix next time I've got a free evening.

Re: the '90s revival thing--Yeah, I'm starting to see the knit ski hats and other grunge references popping up, and catching myself thinking "Yeah, I remember the first time that was in style...." and otherwise echoing my mom's comments about the periodic 1970s revivals. Yikes. I think I'm going to draw the line when they 'rediscover' platform flip-flops and bell-bottom capri pants. Like you said, too painful!

    1. yey, I'm glad I inspired you to go see it :D I hope you enjoy it!

haha oh god, I remember having a pair of Rocketdog platform flip flops O_O they were insane! I also wore platform sneakers to school everyday and got told off every day haha. I seem to remember everything had a spring on it, with something on the end of the spring - like a pen with a spring and then a ball of fluff... weird!

  4. Would you believe I still haven't seen this movie--only in random fragments? I like the outfit of hers in the grey sweater with white collar, today that would translate to Thom Browne/Black Fleece. My 90s movies of choice are Clueless and The Crow--but Cruel Intentions is a classic too.

    1. ahh gosh, you must see it all the way through! it is well worth it :) I love the grey sweater look as well - the collar is so nice and has such long pointy tips, if that makes sense? I also love her hair in that shot. I LOOOOOOVE Clueless and Cruel Intentions, and also She's All That! ahhh I want to watch them all now :D

  10. Don't ever see the musical, it's just awful, me and my Mum went to help out a community project and the whole thing was just mind numbing, they totally ignored every aspect of the film that sets it aside from being 'just another chick flick.' I showed my Mum the film afterwards, which she begrudgingly watched, and she couldn't believe it. She now buys me a fluffy pink pen every Birthday and Christmas. x

    1. omg really!? ahh thanks for the warning! I was actually saying to Bob after we watched it that I wanted to go see the musical, but I definitely won't now! I'm quite baffled at how they managed to turn it into a musical actually, it doesn't seem like the kind of text particularly partial to that kind of adaptation! I LOVE fluffy pink pens - the MUST have of all cool girls in my classroom at primary school :)
