I mentioned in the comments on this post that Robin and I had received a beautiful gift, and that it had spurred me off to redecorate our room. Well, I promised I would post pictures once I could get hold of a camera with which to take them (god, someone please give me back my DSLR), so here they are (not very good pictures, I'll admit). This amazing quilt came to us all the way from Canada and was hand-made by our friend Judy (thank you so much Judy! we LOVE it!). It hasn't left our bed since it arrived in the post, and it really brightens up our little room. I've been wanting to share this with you ever since it arrived, but a crappy mobile phone picture just couldn't do it justice so I've held out for a slightly better one. You can get an idea of the soft grey I chose to paint our room with as well, although - again - not a great picture (the light is bad ALL of the time in the winter!). The dark blues and warm yellows in the quilt give the room some much needed warmth and colour - I just want to wrap myself in it and sit by a roaring fire, in a cabin, in the alps...

Looking at it makes me really really want to learn how to make quilts - another thing for the 'if I ever have the time' list! :-) So thank you very very much to the wonderfully talented and generous Judy!

twelve things: january

I recently discovered the wonderful blog Out of the Bag (and spent a good two days reading every single post on there from the most recent to the very first). Lin, who writes Out of the Bag, gave herself a challenge for 2011 - to only buy ten things. Yep, ten things, all year. I think it's such a wonderful idea, and - even if it's not 100% successful - it definitely provides one with a sense of perspective in terms of adding to your wardrobe. It also makes looking back at the year and being able to analyse what you've spent your money on much easier; if you've just been buying here and there and not keeping tabs on things at all it's very difficult.

As part of my wardrobe rehab then, I've decided to take a leaf from Lin's book and set myself a similar challenge: this year I will only buy twelve things for my closet, that's one thing per month. I'm hoping that this self set rule will not only help me in trying to keep my closet minimal and ordered, but will also work somewhat towards trying to maximise my meager income.

I have no idea how effective this will be. I've definitely stopped buying as much recently anyway, but when I think back to the hundreds of items a year I purchased during my first few years at university I do wonder whether or not I'll be able to stick to such stringent rules of shopping. I also can't decide whether or not to include the buying of basics in this scheme - I go through a lot of cheap plain black/grey long sleeved tees and plain knitwear like cardigans and turtle necks, and usually I partly restock these every three or four months. I suppose that should indicate to me that I'm buying too cheap: if you buy cheap you buy twice, right?

Onto January then: I've been incredibly naughty and already made this month's purchase. This coat was at Zara while I still worked there, and although I loved it I couldn't justify spending so much on yet another coat. I stumbled across it on Park & Cube though (see the photo above), and loved the look so much that I began seriously regretting dismissing it. Shin has styled it perfectly; with grey knitwear and delicate gold jewellery, love love love. It's boxy shape and popcorn-esque knit remind me of Isabel Marant's now iconic outerwear designs, don't you agree? Very very luckily the coat was still in stock on Zara's website. Not only in stock, but reduced by more than half it's original price in their sale. After a few days of umming and aahring about whether or not I could justify the purchase, it was reduced by another £10 and I snapped it up immediately, phew!

I was notified of dispatch yesterday, so I'm hoping I'll be able to go and collect it soon (did you know you can order things to Zara stores free of charge?) and I sure am excited. My every day uniform is very plain (jeans, crew neck, pumps) so coats are a good way for me to jazz up my overall look. Plus, I think I must wear some form of coat 75% of the year here in England (or at least have it with me in case of an impromptu cold snap) so I always feel like I get my money's worth. I have the slight nerves that always come from having ordered something online (will it fit? will I keep it even if it doesn't and let it sit at the back of the closet until it gets eaten by moths?) but my fingers are crossed for it looking as lovely on me as it does on Shin (it won't), and I've vowed to myself that I'll return it immediately if it's not right.

Living Without Things: A Muji Column

When I first posted about wanting to complete a 'wardrobe rehab' and get rid of a lot of the things that I own (both clothing and general clutter), Alexia sent me this amazing article to read.

I found it amazingly inspiring, and have gone back to read it several times since Alexia brought it to my attention. It was first published in Muji's in house magazine, and you can see the original article on Muji's facebook page.

If we let our guard down, then our lives steadily fill with things. The whole town abounds in things - there are books we want to read and magazines too; we want CDs, and an accumulation of small things that we meaninglessly buy outside seem like they could crush the spaces of the house. But amongst this, there are also people who are good at getting along with things, living with the least amount of things possible.

The “Thinking of the Shape of Homes” project team has continued visiting the homes of customers and observing their ways of life. One home we visited in the course of this study lived a life that was amazingly free of “things”. For example, in this household of three, there are a total of 12 pairs of shoes – the husband has 6 pairs (3 pairs of sneakers, 2 pairs of leather shoes and 1 pair of tennis shoes), the wife has 4 pairs (1 pair of sneakers and 3 pairs of leather shoes) and the child has 2 pairs. How does that compare with the number of pairs of shoes that you have?

Apparently, they have a rule that they don’t buy the next pair of shoes until they’ve completely worn out the pair that they have. Looking around the room, what is most symbolic is shirts. Together, the husband and wife have a total of 10 shirts between them, which are hung neatly in their closet. There were about two CDs, but in general, they don’t have them. They utilize rental services and download music, then store things on an iPod. They don’t have books, but borrow them all from the library. They have the minimum number of plates and bowls. They don’t have a kitchen cabinet – they use two drawers between the gas stove, the sink and the cabinet in place of a kitchen cabinet.

With regard to down quilts, they use an external service to store them for the seasons where they aren’t used, while they use a rental service so that they can change the size of their child’s bed in line with their growth. Not only do they have few things, they also like organizing things; they use refillable bottles for shampoo and conditioner and the wet areas are all well-organized. There is space in all of their storage areas, and they put things back in the places reserved for them.

Putting things away after they’ve been used; this is the kind of lifestyle that they enforce. Right from the start, they don’t have a lot of things, so their belongings don’t spill out. In the drawers of the washbasin in the area you get undressed and dressed before/ after having a bath, there were a number of shampoo and laundry detergent refills neatly stored. All of the condiments were stored away neatly in the refrigerator – there was no clutter. They don’t buy anything superfluous, and they freeze and keep anything that is left over. Not only do they not have things, they don’t waste things either. There wasn’t even a pot sticking out in the kitchen. It really was amazing, and we were very impressed that someone could achieve so much. Not having things means knowing exactly what is necessary, and it can be said that as a result, it is possible to accomplish managing things in a tidy fashion. It’s always knowing where things are.

Of course, not everyone can do this. In MUJI House Mail News vol. 97 “Knowledge About Storage”, is the comment, “In essence, storage is about how to throw things away”. But in this household, they have a thorough conviction that goes above how to go about throwing things away – it’s about how to not buy things.

There is a mountain of information about what is called storage know-how out there, but in the end, it could be said that what is more important than storage techniques is having a clear idea on how to deal with things. And as with the house we visited this time, we believe that there is also the choice to not buy something in the first place. It’s no longer a time when houses have storehouses where people store their precious, expensive family heirlooms handed down like they did in times past. These days, what is important is not having things, but how to not have things; we also thought that perhaps this, on the contrary, is affluence. We could also almost say that making full use of IT and organizing necessary information in a compact manner is something that we can do because of the present.

A life where we don’t have “things”. A life where we don’t buy things. How about it? It was a household survey that made us think about how we deal with things.

There seems to be an incredible calmness and peace which comes from knowing where everything is, and know that you have enough but just enough.

collections I'm coveting: spring 2012

There's a definite trend here - the collections I'm drawn to this Spring are all about navy blue, grey and black with flashes of brown (usually in leather form) here and there. I'm leaning towards plain rather than printed pieces, but some small plaids and polka dots are sneaking in now and again. I'm especially amorous of these wonderful maxi shift dresses by Steven Alan, but finding it difficult to imagine a time where the weather here in England would be warm enough to wear one. The festive period was unseasonably warm, but nature seems to be making up for that now with an array of thick frosts and fierce icy winds. Summer seems further away than ever.

I had a strange longing to shop in United Colors of Benetton the other day. The brand reminds me so strongly of being a kid in the 90s, and of the first few times I ever read fashion magazines (remember those iconic print ads?). I was thinking of one of their stores that used to be in a nearby shopping centre; a really tiny shop which was stacked with folded cashmere sweaters from floor to ceiling. I recall being particularly dazzled by the delicious range of bright colours. Alas, that store is no more, but after looking them up online for the first time in years I'm feeling very excited for a time when they offer online shopping (hopefully soon because I need grey cashmere asap).

I've recently come to the realisation that I need to wear glasses 24/7. Something which I probably should have been doing for a while, but I've been [stupidly] defying my optician for about ten years. At the moment I wear glasses for reading and computer work only. My current pair are okay, but a little large, clunky and heavy for constant wear. I want a style which will look timeless yet clean and modern, and which are thin enough to feel light and comfortable on my face. My search was initially very disheartening - all of the pairs I love (Tom Ford, Chanel, Bulgari) are too far above the £200 mark for my liking, and although I think spending a reasonable amount of money on something I will wear everyday is a good investment, I just can't justify that expense right now.

After a few disappointing trips to various opticians, and after trawling every 'cheap glasses frames' website I could find on Google, I decided to turn my attentions to somewhere I've never shopped before: Ebay. I was pleasantly surprised and - eventually - overjoyed, to find not one but two perfect pairs (so greedy). I ended up buying two pairs of Ralph Lauren frames, and they only cost me £30 (yes, for both pairs). I chose a half framed dark tortoiseshell pair and a full framed green/grey tortoiseshell pair, which are both lovely. Both styles are circa 2000, so I wouldn't have been able to get them anywhere else, I feel like I discovered some real gems! I'm not sure that this will start any sort of Ebay obsession - I still find the whole thing a tad confusing - but I'll definitely consider shopping there more, especially when looking for something so specific.

I went into Vision Express today to get a quote for the lenses, and it was nearly £300 just for standard quality! I left totally disgusted, I honestly don't think something so basic should cost so much. Luckily there are numerous web companies you can send frames to be glazed, which will only cost me about another £25 on each frame. A total cost of £80 for two pairs of new glasses then, I think that's pretty excellent. Just goes to show how helpful the internet can be :-)

Absolutely in love with this collection for Vero Moda by Alexa Chung, especially the blue dress in the top picture (I'm worried it might be a little short for me though). I think Alexa may well be sartorially perfect, her collection for Madewell inspired a similar awe in me. The campaign for this particular collection may well be my favourite yet, though.

The prices at Vero Moda are more than reasonable, which leads me to wonder about the quality of the products. Have you ever ordered anything from Vero Moda before? And if so, what did you think?

I make a habit of reading all of the magazines that come with my dad's Sunday newspapers, and am particularly fond of this 'All Ages' feature which runs weekly in The Guardian magazine. This Sunday's offering was particularly pleasing, featuring an array of pretty candy pinks. Now, pink is a colour I usually steer well clear from. I like it, don't get me wrong, but I can never seem to make it work for me. Several things have prompted me to give it another shot though, the culmination of which has been happening upon this lovely article. A little insight into my train of thought on this matter:

When I was about 12, I had a dusty pink coloured zipped fleece, which came as the inner of a pink rain mac. I loved this fleece, and wore it constantly with navy jeans and navy Superga sneakers. I have a particularly fond memory of wearing said outfit on the beach one day. I wore this fleece until it died from bobble disease, RIP.
I saw a lady in the mall recently wearing a beautiful hot pink coloured cashmere v-neck sweater over a crisp white shirt, and it looked amazing. Like Barbie, on a particularly chic day off. I'm thinking this one from Uniqlo would be perfect...
This song from the musical Funny Face is amazing. It makes me want to wear pink from head to toe!
MJ, who writes the wonderful blog Dreaming Spires, got this pink leather satchel. And I am so soooooo jealous. I love it. It's much cuter than my large black version (which seems utterly boring in comparison).

Pink compliments many of my most loved (and worn) colours, namely navy and grey, so owning a few pink pieces wouldn't be straying too far from my path of minimalistic wardrobe perfection, would it? What do you think dear readers, do you think pink?

wardrobe rehab: part one, culling

As I've mentioned in earlier posts, I've been redecorating our bedroom, and part and parcel of that has been clearing out a lot of old things that we no longer use. The wardrobe has made up the biggest portion of this mass clearout, as - even after a good few attempts at closet minimalism over the years - I still seem to own clothes that I bought when I was fourteen. Obviously it's nice - in some respects - to think that I'm the same size now as I was when I was a teen, but it certainly has drawbacks too -- I can't just go through my closet and divide items into things that fit and things that don't, and the whole decluttering process seems to become a lot more complicated.

Geneva, the writer of the wonderful blog A Pair & a Spare (who has one of the best wardrobes ever, by the way) coined the term 'wardrobe rehab' for this process of paring down one's closet, which I think describes it brilliantly, and so I've borrowed it from her :)

Part one of my rehab - as suggested by Geneva - has been a massive clear out. I've sent a lot of things to the charity shop or offered them to friends/family. It feels good to finally get rid of some items which I was holding onto, but which I knew - in my heart of hearts - I would never wear again. I've also been able to identify which colours I wear most (grey, black, navy, wine red, beige), and which colours I don't wear at all (green, yellow) - so from now on I won't waste my money on investing in anything that clashes with my minimal colour palette. When looking at my 'to go' pile, I can see that buying shorts and short skirts/dresses is usually a mistake for me; I suit a midi length skirt much better. Another thing I seemed to cull a lot of was 'party' clothing -- the reality is that I just don't go out (to party, that is) very much, so owning a lot of spangley clothing and fancy footwear is a waste of space for me. I have one really great black dress (from Zara, bought about three years ago) which I still adore, and which sees me through any impromptu special events. I may add one or two more party-ready items to my closet eventually (some Miu Miu glitter pumps, please?), but for now I think this will do.

I dream of an uncluttered and beautifully curated closet, and a perfect personal style. Like this:

We awoke this morning to a beautiful view outside of our window (which my questionable Blackberry camera does not do one bit of justice to) : everything kissed with thick, sparkling frost, the woods around our house look absolutely magical! Robin and I are having a lazy morning in bed, reading magazines, drinking coffee, and listening to The Archers omnibus on Radio 4. One day of peace and quiet before another week at work begins tomorrow.

All I want to wear at the weekends is comfy tracksuit-esque clothing, preferably in grey tones. It looks a little sloppy I guess, but it's equally good for snuggling on the sofa and nipping to the corner shop to buy diet coke and chocolate. I've been considering buying a pair of New Balance trainers recently, I think this black pair look comfy and quite smart and neat - sometimes Converse (the only other sneakers I own) can be a little stiff and uncomfortable.

p.s. I seem to be updating my tumblr a lot more than this blog recently, an unfortunate symptom of having too much to do.

I had my very last shift at Zara yesterday, and boy, am I glad to have finally finished working in retail and - more specifically - at the dreaded Metrocentre (let's hope it's for good). For those of you who aren't local/have never heard of said centre, the Metrocentre is a giant shopping mall in Gateshead. I've worked at the Metrocentre in one way or another for the past five years so you can imagine how thrilled I am to finally see the back of it.

Anyway, the majority of the Boxing Day sales started in the mall yesterday and it was absolutely mental (yeah, what happened to them not starting until January 1st?). Robin and I awoke yesterday morning to radio 4 talking about shoppers queuing in London from 2am, just for a chance to snatch a prize from their slightly more tardy fellow bargain hunters. (Don't believe me? Well take a look at this article in The Guardian). The Metro was not quite this insane, but it wasn't far off, believe me. I'm pretty sure that I am not alone in thinking that this is incredibly sad and a little soul destroying : no cut price treasure would be amazing enough to tempt me out of my warm snuggley bed in the small hours of the morning on Boxing Day, I can tell you. And I wonder if the people who control these high streets and shopping malls ever think of the staff that are forced to turn up at 6am the day after Christmas, through no choice of their own? Aside from these retail worker grumbles and gripes, I just find sale shopping in general very tiresome and have almost completely stopped looking in sales (bar ones online) in recent years because I find them so stressful.

Further to these anxieties, I often find sale shopping fairly pointless -- the times when I have engaged in a little 'wardrobe rehab' have always resulted in me culling numerous items bought in sales due to the fact that they've been bought in the spur of the moment, not thought through, and therefore not worn or used. I think the lesson here (for me at least) is that frenzied sale shopping usually does not result in one making decent or well considered purchases.

All this being said though, I love to bag a bargain just as much as the next person, and I am always thrilled to find something that I actually really want has been reduced in a sale. To avoid filling my life with crap I don't want/need I like to remind myself of a few simple sale shopping guidelines:

Before embarking on a sale shopping mission, take a good look at your current wardrobe and make a little list of what you would like to add. Basics such as wool/cashmere jumpers and plain jeans often crop up in sales so it's a good time to cheaply fill any 'holes' in your capsule collection.
Make a short list of some 'statement' pieces that you've been hoping to add to your wardrobe. I try and steer clear from coveting any particular brands or designers, and instead list things like 'velvet smoking slippers' (as opposed to 'Kurt Geiger smoking slippers', for example) or 'silver bracelet watch'. It's more likely you'll be able to find what you're looking for if you broaden your horizons!
Look online. You'll feel much calmer sitting in the comfort of your own home and drinking a cup of tea, than you would in a slightly panicked and very busy high street store, and hopefully this will eliminate some rushed and unconsidered purchases. Most sites are now starting their online sales on Christmas day, so if you find a spare moment between guzzling turkey and watching Dr Who you can use it to buy a new sofa, hooray! (Bear in mind that this method works best if you've tried things on in the store previously).
Don't fall into the "but I don't want to come away empty handed" trap. If you don't see anything you really want then don't buy anything at all, it's a waste of money and space.
Do not venture into Primark. Okay so maybe I'm biased, because I know Primark sell some pretty good stuff sometimes and they aren't that bad. But honestly, there will be stuff ALL over the floor and LOADS of people and screaming children EVERYWHERE and your head may well explode. So although you may well get a crew neck t-shirt for 50p rather than it's usual £3, for the sake of your own sanity just stay away.
Try everything on if possible. I've bought a lot of ill fitting sale clothing over the years (because I couldn't be bothered to go into the fitting room and get undressed etc) that have remained unworn at the back of my closet before eventually being sent to the charity shop. It's so easy to think "I'll just return this if it doesn't fit", but then you never do, because you're like "oh well, it was only five pounds, I'll just keep it". It's still a waste, even it it's a small waste.

It's like a military operation. I'm like Monica is that episode of Friends where she takes Rachel and Phoebe to buy her wedding dress from a sample sale, maybe I should invest in a whistle... Do you have any sale shopping tips or tricks? Or have you purchased something really great in the sales this year? Or do you just want to tell me that I am crazy and write too many lists/sets of rules (I am, I do). Answers and comments on a post card please (or in the comment box, as the case may be).

Honor Pre-Fall 2012

I feel overwhelming amounts of love and excitement about this amazing collection from Honor. Just look at it's frothy, grey-toned, ladylike awesomeness, look!!!!! All of my favourite colours and shapes and textures, all rolled into one. You have no idea how much I am coveting that wonderful soft grey skirt (top left) and it's shorter, claret coloured sister (bottom right), ahhhhhh *le sigh*. I love the backdrop for these shots as well, the mushroomy grey coloured abstract lines equally remind me of a forest and a city scape - very effective.

home wares from Muji & IKEA, wall paint in 'Taupe' from Dulux

I'm so busy, so I have no idea what has possessed me to do this but I am redecorating mine and Robin's bedroom. I have become nothing short of obsessed with space saving and paring down my possessions recently, and I've become very fond of this pared down Scandinavian minimalist style. We currently have three huge book cases and one massive three door wardrobe in our room, plus lots of boxes under the bed. I want to get it down to just one book case, and a much much smaller wardrobe. What's the point in having so many clothes, I forget what's in there half of the time! The first - and so far most helpful - space saving method I implicated was to take all of my DVDs and CDs out of their cases and to put them in thin clear plastic disc slips instead. I then threw away the cases. Yes, I realise it may seem drastic and I know that some people really love the DVD case etc. But for me, the space is worth much more than the case - I threw away an entire massive bin liner full of 120 DVD cases and in their new plastic slips they don't even take up a whole filing box. The next thing on my list is to go through the masses of pants and socks I have accumulated over the years, and pare it down to fourteen pairs a piece, I should not need to own more than two weeks worth of underwear! I have a washing machine for goodness sake!

I've decided on a taupe/grey colour scheme with silver, black and pine accents. I can't wait to get the walls painted!

Season's Greetings lovely readers, it - once again - feels like such a long time since my last post. Work has been insanely busy but I am enjoying it so much. It seems that I joined a business at exactly the right time, as sales are booming, another assistant has even been hired and I'm now working pretty much full time. I totally love it, and it feels so refreshing to go to a job that I actually like and am genuinely interested in. I especially love seeing new products as they arrive, writing the descriptions for the site, and cooking up possible blog post ideas as I go. I just loved this retro inspired glasses double ring, it reminds me of Rita Skeeter (so I called it the 'Rita' Ring!), what do you think??

Gosh it feels like such a long time since my last blog post. I have been insanely busy these past few weeks with my new job (which - did I mention - I totally love) and with preparations for Christmas. In fact, the only reason that I have time to write this today is that I'm off sick with an awful bought of flu, yuck. I have a horrible blotchy red face, a crusty nose, and a persistent headache -- it's really no fun at all. I've spent the day tucked up in bed sipping soup/tea, watching crappy Christmas films on channel 5 and listening to radio 4. It's definitely got me thinking about all of the home comforts we rely on to get us through the winter flu blues - soft pyjamas, hot water bottles, essential oils, and cuddly blankets. They make being ill a little less awful, am I right? I am really hoping to be feeling a little better tomorrow, enough - at least - to drag myself to work. This flu has arrived in possibly the busiest few weeks ever - very distressing!

A few other reasons I haven't been posting so much recently -- my dad unfortunately sold his lovely DSLR camera and I have no way of taking photos (and I was just getting used to how the settings worked too!). I've been thinking about saving up for a few months to buy this new Sony camera, which is apparently very good. It's the NEX 5N, have any of you heard anything about it? Can you offer me any camera buying advice?? My laptop has also dies a very sad death (to the point of not even turning on) so my computer situation obviously also needs addressing asap -- these things always all happen at once.

Hopefully I'll be set up with new blog making equipment very soon, but in the meantime please bear with me and this site while the posting is so intermittent! December is looming, and I find that with the first of the month the gift shopping panic ensues. I planned to do all of my shopping early this year and be incredibly well prepared, and I did do some, but then the plan seemed to go awry and - alas - I find myself in this familiar giftless state and Christmas is less than a month away! I find lists and plans very effective and comforting, so the first thing I do when setting about my festive shopping is to try and work out on paper who would like what and what would make a good gift for someone -- I always steer clear from buying people clothing or anything too personal because I think it's really really difficult to choose things like that for others, and unless you're sure about whether or not they'll like it, it's a big risk.

In my opinion, the best presents are just small, lovely things, which aren't too flash or fancy (that can make people feel awkward sometimes, am I right?) but that bring a little joy and happiness into people's days. I like small perishable gifts like soap, coffee, candles and essential oils, because they have a practical every use and hopefully won't just end up sitting in a cupboard gathering dust. Comforting wintery items like snuggly socks, woolen blankets and a mug for hot chocolate are also great, and will be much appreciated on a frosty Christmas morning.

Books and DVDs are a slightly different matter. Don't get me wrong, I think they make fantastic presents, but it's really difficult to choose something that you know the other person hasn't already got. A good tip is to stick to special editions of books, because even if your recipient does already have a copy, the new one will still be special. I love this new edition of His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, and I think the cover looks very wintery and festive (although how they managed to get all three books into one is totally beyond me, the font must be tiny!). Make sure you check out your local Oxfam book shop and second hand book shop for these too! As far as films go I love ones with a Christmas theme, it's like giving someone the gift of festive cheer in cinematic form. If you don't want to buy someone an actual DVD, then how about a pair of cinema tickets? Last year Robin and I went to see It's a Wonderful Life at our local independent cinema, and it was amazing and would make a great gift for a couple.

And last but not least: remember to treat yourself this Christmas. It may sound a little selfish (and I suppose it is) but Christmas is a great opportunity to forget about work commitments for a few days, relax, and even splash out on a present for yourself -- if I was rich I would definitely buy myself this amazing Fuji camera, isn't it wonderful??! If I am ever saving for an expensive item for myself, the festive season is always a good excuse to finally get it. Buying for yourself is so easy, because you always know exactly what to get...

We Need to Talk About Tilda

Bonjour all. So I've been missing in action lately, again. Sorry about that, I really hate the feeling that this blog is stagnating in any way, and I work hard to keep it regularly updated but sometimes I just can't find the spare moments. I have a great reason though - I finally got a new job! Yup, are jobs like buses or what? I only just landed a role at Zara and then another job seems to pop up out of nowhere! My new job is with a great company called Seasons Online who sell jewelry and accessories. My role involves writing their blog, updating their website, and doing design and photoshop work for them. I started last week, and absolutely love it so far. I am so so pleased to have finally found a job that really suits me and my skills and I feel so much happier already :) I'm just generally very excited to get settled into a new job and a new routine. I'm hoping to keep my job at Zara too (although at a reduced number of hours); the discount and extra money is just too good to let go of! Anyway, I'm sure I'll speak more about this at a later date, I just wanted to briefly explain my random absence from the blogosphere.

So on with the actual post I wanted to make: It was Bob's birthday last Tuesday and we celebrated by having a lovely - and kind of lazy - day off. We went to the cinema and ate crisps and sweets and then went for dinner. It was awesome, happy birthday sweetheart :3 We did pick rather an odd film to watch that day however, and by odd I mean definitely not a 'feel good' birthday movie. We went to see the adaptation of We Need to Talk About Kevin starring Tilda Swinton, and it was utterly harrowing, and absolutely amazing. I listened to the BBC Radio 4 adaptation of the novel years ago, but I don't think the horrible magnitude of the story really hit me then like it has now. I actually didn't cry very much in the cinema (and believe me, I cry at ALL things) because I spent the whole time feeling totally confused and a little numb (as intended, I think). I won't say too much about the story etc as I'm sure you'll all want to see the movie for yourselves, but I will say that Tilda is exquisite and one of my favourite actresses/people ever. I love her short hair and no make-up look (oh how I wish I had her alien-like bone structure and ethereal height), and take a look at how amazingly she pulls off this Celiné (or Pringle?) sweater and pants ensemble, perfection! Aside from the greatness of Ms Swinton though, the film is genuinely amazing, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Winter can be pretty harsh, right? Although I love the sight of the leaves turning golden in the woods outside my house and the city festively lit up in the early evening darkness, the cold and dark and damp can definitely grind one down after a time, especially if you feel like you have nothing to do. My favourite way to spend a day off at the moment is to go into Durham City with Robin (which is an especially beautiful city this time of year) and go swimming. The Durham pool has a huge glass wall at one end which looks out onto a small woods, and as the sky gets darker the lights come on inside the pool and it feels like you're inside a space ship or something, it's wonderful. It's nice to get out and pull on some comfy jeans and a cosy wooly jumper, and then take refuge against the cold in the nearest coffee shop - I think I have a serious addiction to 'Christmas' flavoured beverages, especially the gingerbread latté in Starbucks and the dark chocolate mocha in Caffe Nero... yum yum yum. I'm really looking forward to some of the events taking place in the North East this winter, especially the Lumieré light festival in Durham City :)

Ahh, how I wish I were snuggled up against the oncoming cold in these vintage style pyjamas and cashmere blend cardie, I imagine I'd feel very serene and clean and comfy... I really wish there was a J Crew store near to where I live, their website is fast becoming my most visited online shopping haunt but I'm yet to actually make a purchase. I'm just totally in love with their clean lined, classic aesthetic. I'm really enjoying reading their J Crew tumblog, so full of wonderful sartorial inspirations and exciting little 'behind the scenes' peeks.

It feels like so long since my last blog post, it's been about a week since I've had the time to leisurely procrastinate over the internet. I've seriously missed musing over online stores filled with things I can't afford, and wonderful blog posts filled with inspirations. I've had so many things I wanted to share on here but no time in which to write! So many things have happened this past week:

I [finally] left my job at Peacocks and started a new one at Zara (hooray for more money, boo for not being able to get a degree worthy job just yet...).
I worked every single day, even though I have been suffering from a pretty bad head cold. It's clearing up now, thank goodness!
I started a really exciting new online project - more on this at a later date.
I watched the first two seasons of Battlestar Gallactica - OH MY GOD IT IS AWESOME.

I have a very welcome three days off starting yesterday. I spent yesterday and today pretty much just doing cleaning, sorting out washing and attending to all of the things I've had to neglect this past week. I think I need another three days off just to relax in! I look and feel so exhausted, and I think I've consumed about five gallons of Starbucks in the past seven days just to keep me going. Hopefully this week will be a more relaxing endeavor, and I'm really looking forward to the end of this month (pay day in particular...).

This weekend Robin and I celebrated our first anniversary. He composed a beautiful cover of Sailing By for me, which I absolutely adore. Sailing By is our song -- it plays every night at 00:46 just before the shipping forecast on BBC Radio 4. We always listen together, and I hope we will listen to it together for many years to come. It has been the most wonderful, wonderful year, and I have never in my life been so happy. I love you sweetheart, happy one year anniversary <3

Style Inspiration: Tilly Masterson

I watched Goldfinger the other day, because I was desperate to get some Sean Connnery in my life. The Bond films starring Connery are easily my favourite (although they are closely followed by the Roger Moore ones), and when I'm reading the novels Connery is the Bond I usually have in mind. He just looks and sounds and behaves perfectly, although he is far more misogynistic and far less romantic in the films than in the novels. The costumes for Goldfinger are absolutely amazing, Bond rocks some particularly delightful three piece suits. What really caught my eye though, was the outfit of the (literally) very short lived character - Tilly Masterson. Tilly is only in the film for a handful of scenes are the beginning of the plot, which is a real shame because she is so damn fierce! I am absolutely in love with what she wears (see some screen grabs above), especially the vintage Hermés studded belt and charcoal pencil skirt, and I adore the neutral and classic colour palette of her costume. I love a good cardigan thrown over the shoulders like a cape, á la Audrey Hepburn, and Tilly's is of a particulrly nice cream aran knit variety.

Whilst recently culling my wardrobe, I think I decided that pencil skirts weren't really my thing (they make me look chunky, especially my short legs) so I'd have to switch the pencil skirt in this ensemble for a fuller more a-line version. I absolutely love the pencil skirt silhouette on other people, though, and I still live in hope of finding one that suits me someday. Can I just say, INVEST IN EVERYTHING CHARCOAL. It truly is the perfect colour. It can be paired with pretty much everything; it's as classic and chic as black and navy but won't fade so much (or you won't be able to tell) with continued wear. Uniqlo are particularly good producers of charcoal coloured clothing, I can't get enough!

I have just started reading the Goldfinger novel (which is brilliant, by the way), and I can't tell yet whether or not Tilly is a character in it, but I certainly hope so. She's great for her few scenes in the film, if only she'd remained a little longer! -- RIP Tilly, you were sartorially inspiring while you lasted.

Have I convinced anyone that they should read the Bond novels yet?

Fashion + Fiction

Oh man, I am so excited! I know I've been banging on for weeks and weeks about my obsession with the way fashion intersects with literature and how awesome that can be, but oh my god, someone else thinks so too! The Guardian have posted today about a new H&M collection designed by Trish Summerville, the costume designer for the American remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. The collection emulates the tough and grungy style of the story's heroine, Lisbeth Salander, with slouchy charcoal knits, ripped shirts, and leathers. I know the collection isn't -strictly- an emulation of a literary figure, because obviously Lisbeth has been re-mediated (twice, in fact) through the medium of film. But the connection is certainly there, and I love that this kind of thinking is making it's way onto the high street. I certainly hope this can pave the way for more interesting collections of this sort -- how about something inspired by the works of Ian Flemming? Haha, kidding (I'm not kidding, someone please do this).

perfect coats at Tocca

It's bloody difficult to make a something sartorially perfect, but I think Tocca have come just about as close as can be with these coats from t heir latest collection. I love the grey one especially, the simple black detailing is amazing. At about £345 each, yes, they are expensive, but 'cost per wear' is back in a big way so get your calculators out. In the UK I think it's safe to say that we wear a coat for about half of the year (if not more), so for about 183 days. That makes one of these coats cost about £1.90 for every day you wear it in the first year, not bad for a good investment!? Think about the rubbish you spend £1.90 on per day - chewing gum, coffee, sweets, crisps, taking the bus instead of walking - you could have a beautiful new coat instead!!

Zara bag / vintage wool kilt / Primark black long sleeve top

I've had quite a few comments/emails recently asking me why I don't post outfit photos on this blog . Well, generally it's because I can't find the time to set up a tripod or get someone to take a picture of me, and I don't like to take the photos on my iPhone because the quality isn't so good. It's also partly because I don't particularly like photographs of myself, and feel far more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it -- if only I had a model on hand 24/7 to dress up and take photographs of!?

Anyway, I'm definitely going to make more of a effort to post my outfits on here, starting today. This outfit is actually what I wore on Friday when Robin and I went out for drinks and a meal. I've recently adopted this amazing vintage wool kilt from my mum's wardrobe (she bought it in a charity shop 20 years ago for about £4). It's very, very warm, I felt like I was wearing a blanket (which I guess I was essentially). The length and swishyness of the skirt kind of makes me feel like I'm in a Jane Austen TV adaptation, but then the tartan and the leather buckles makes me feel very punk, I'm totally in love with it. It's quite a loud and striking piece, so I just wore it with a black long sleeve, black pumps, and my well-loved Zara bag. I really want to wear it with a black knitted turtle neck and boots when the weather gets a little colder. It needs taking up ever so slightly before I do wear it again though - I kept stepping on it!

Nothing of my head/face in this post I'm afraid but my hair was an absolute mess and I was actually on my way to get it cut that very day. I'm now sporting a very short bob that Anna Wintour would be proud of - pictures will perhaps follow later. So there ya have it, an outfit post! What do you think?

I want this Céline bag so so badly, I can't even tell you. It feels utterly unrealistic that I will ever own it though, it's far too expensive for me to even be dreaming of right now. It is utterly perfect -- a mix of black leather and suede which will go with anything and everything, a simple boxy shape big enough for books and files etc, and unusual yet classic detailing. Oh Céline bag, why can't I have you?

Hey remember a few months ago when I made that Marilyn Monroe collage and posted it here? No? Well, little did I know then that a new Marilyn biopic - My Week With Marilyn - was on it's way to our cinema screens, and it looks absolutely fabulous. I'd heard whispers around forums about this, but hadn't actually seen the trailer until I read the wonderful spread about the film in this week's Grazia, now I can't stop watching it! Doesn't Michelle Williams look perfect as Marilyn? I can't wait to see it, I'm so excited! I'm positive the film will provide much sartorial inspiration: give me cropped trousers, loafers, cardigans and headscarves!

Michelle is already doing promo for the film, and already making red carpet hits (see here), It'll be exciting to see the rest of her promo wardrobe. I love her classic, accessory free styling, and her flawless make-up and hair.

Which films are you looking forward to this Winter? I'm hoping to go and see Melancholia tomorrow, but I also want to see Drive and Tyrannosaur before they finish.

Style Inspiration: Tatiana Romanova

This week I finished reading my fifth Bond novel, From Russia With Love. I was hoping (against all odds, I know) that Tiffany Case would be in the book, but I was sadly disappointed (and not surprised, these girls never stick around). Somewhere between books four and five, she leaves Bond for some other guy and returns to America. Bond is all heartbroken and bitter and emotional, etc etc. Thankfully, a new lady appears to take his mind off it and as Bond heroines go, she does not disappoint. As the title indicates, much of the novel is set is Russia, and Bond's latest love interest is a Russian spy and Greta Garbo lookalike, Tatiana. She conjures images of romantic Russian fur hats and collars, and big snow-proof boots. I was happily reminded of the Ulyanna Sergeenko collection I posted about last month: the wonderful flowing skirts, fur mufflers and traditional Russian silhouettes. The last half of the story takes place on board the Orient Express, so it's super romantic, I absolutely love train journeys and train stations (Robin and I had our very first kiss in a train station!).

I haven't seen the film version of this Bond adventure for a long time, but I feel like I might devote a night in (accompanied by a bottle of wine) to it very soon. I'm surprised to see that they chose a blonde actress to play Tatiana but she looks flawless and beautiful regardless, and who can resist Sean Connery?

I've missed a couple of Bond ladies out along the way, but I will be returning to them asap. I've just started Dr No, and it's awesome, I'm very excited to be getting to bed early for some reading time tonight!

searching for a perfect wrap dress

All summer I searched for a perfect wrap dress, just like this one above (image found via tumblr), but have had no luck. All the ones I seem to find either have a horrible pattern on them, and/or are made from horrible materials like viscose or polyester! I really just want one which is a nice simple pattern (again, like the one in the picture) preferably in blue, black or grey, and which is made from a cotton and lyrca/elastane mix. Am I asking too much? I really think a wrap dress would be a lovely classic piece to have in my wardrobe come spring/summer next year.

Have any of you readers found a good wrap dress recently? can you recommend somewhere for me to search for one?

dreaming of a well organised closet

I've been culling clothes from my wardrobe left, right and centre recently, and it feels really good. Considering I haven't changed much in size since the age of 14, I hoard so many things (as I've never grown out of them!) including shoes. The majority of my remaining teenage clothes have now been sent to charity, along with a lot of the poor quality clothing I bought on mad shopping sprees in my first few years of university. What is left makes for a wardrobe which is much easier to dress from, I certainly have a better idea of what I do and don't have now, and also what I'd really like to add.

As I am so poor at the moment (no, I really am) I've made a few shopping rules for myself:

No more synthetic fibers like polyester or acrylic - they don't last very long at all.
Only bags and shoes made from leather.
Simple, classic pieces are best, I can always mix them with more exciting/jazzy accessories.
Stick to muted colours as I tend to go off brighter coloured items and end up sending them to charity/giving them away.
Invest in dry cleaning and mending - my best loved clothes are worth maintaining, and it's better than wasting money trying to replace them (and probably not being able to get exactly what I wanted).

Some things I would really like/need to add are: a black wool driving jacket, a small leather handbag, a ribbed fisherman's jumper, and some black ankle boots. All simple basic things that would make a big difference. I am in need of new shoes most desperately, the weather is getting very cold here now and I need some proper stout leather shoes and boots as I'm finding it's too wet and cold to wear pumps or sneakers anymore.

I dream of a perfectly organised closet, one that looks all net and lovely inside when you open the doors...

Five Easy Pieces: Benjamin Bowsher

Well, we haven't had one of these in a while, have we? This - I assure you - is nothing to do with the lovely people involved in creating their 'five pieces', and all to do with me being a useless flake and hideously busy at all times. I've been wanting to post this one for a while though, and I've found a few spare moments (in between cleaning) this morning, to do so. Enjoy!

This week's Five Easy Pieces comes from Ben Bowsher, a graphic designer (check out his professional website, here. Aren't the t-shirts great??) and founder of Magnetic Tape No.1, "an online music zine with an emphasis on the DIY ethos." Ben is currently in the process of setting up Les Morts, a clothing company with designs influenced by the occult and the masonic, and old UFO and conspiracy books from the 60s and 70s. I am so excited to see some of Ben's finished products, in particular, some t-shirts utilising his beautiful typography work. Here are five things that Ben likes right now:

Style Inspiration: George Shaw

A few days ago, I posted about my fondness for pondering the intersections between literature and fashion, and today I've found myself similarly musing over how entwined fashion is with art. If you follow me on Twitter, you may have noticed that Robin and I went to see the George Shaw exhibition at The Baltic in Gateshead twice when it was here (yes, we loved it that much), and I'm now thrilled to learn that not only is Shaw up for the prestigious Turner Prize this year, but that the prize giving ceremony will actually be held in The Baltic. Wonderful!

Today has been cold, very windy, and wet - the typical mediocre British weather we all know and love/hate - and it's the weather that really got me thinking again about George Shaw. He so perfectly captures this perpetual British dampness - his use of glossy Humbrol enamel paint, gives everything a 'just been rained on' kind of look. I love the subject matter; the anonymous council estate houses and dull metal fences, occasionally punctuated by lush greenery and sunshine, could be scenes from just about anywhere in the UK, from any time in the past 20 years. They're oddly homely and comforting, whilst being slightly depressing at the same time, it's a strange juxtaposition but one that strikes perfect balance.

I really feel that fashion - and British fashion in particular - is adopting an 'austerity measures' stance at the moment, one that certainly reminds me of the atmosphere created in these paintings. Throw away fashions are on their way out, and they're making way for sensible investment pieces that could feasibly last the wearer for years and years to come. It's all about stout leather shoes, hard wearing practical leather bags, warm coats and knitwear to wrap up in -- we are protecting ourselves not only against the oncoming harshness of winter, but against the bleak and terrifying recession, and the desolate wilderness of the UK job market.

Anyway, I'm in danger of providing political commentary and/or art criticism here, and I don't know enough about either to do so. Above is a set visually inspired by the paintings of George Shaw, thinking of outfit building in terms of the way his paintings are composed - a dark backdrop of basic greys with surprising flourishes of light and colour.

Style Inspiration: Tiffany Case

I finished Diamonds are Forever yesterday, and I think it was my favourite Bond novel so far (although Live and Let Die is a close second, and they're all brilliant). It's strange, because however amusing and entertaining I find the films, I honestly never thought I'd be really really into James Bond, but it seems I am. All of my favourite novels describe two things in massive detail: food and fashion. And Fleming does both, it is heaven -- My love of fashion is utterly entwined with my love of literature, and vice versa. One of the earliest memories I have of lusting after clothing is when William chooses new corduroy trousers (in bottle green and navy blue) in Goodnight Mr Tom (by Michelle Magorian). I remember reading the description of the way those new trousers made William feel, and how lovely and luxurious and warm and comforting they were to him. I still think of that passage, even now, when people ask me about why I love clothes and fashion. And I still love passages in books which are devoted to describing - in glorious detail - people's attire. (Am I rambling? I think I might be.)

Fleming always does a stellar job of describing Bond and Bond's 'girlfriends' clothing, and the heroine in Diamonds are Forever - Tiffany Case - is a particularly good example of this. Perhaps because Bond is so in love with Tiffany, and takes extra care and attention when dissecting her appearance... I'd like to comb through the novel again and type out all of the passages about Tiffany here for you guys to read, but I'm feeling a bit lazy for such a lengthy undertaking, so here is the one that stuck with me the most: "She was wearing a heavy cream Shantung silk shirt and a charcoal skirt in a cotton-and-wool mixture. The neutral colours showed off her café-au-lait sunburn. The small square Cartier watch with the black strap was her only jewellery and the short fingernails on the small brown hand that lay over his were unpainted. The reflected sunlight from outside shone on the pale gold heavy falling swerve of her hair, in the depths of the chatoyant grey eyes, and on the glint of the white teeth between her luxurious lips that were half open with her question." The ladies in Fleming's novels are always so much more interesting than Bond himself, it's a real shame they all die/inexplicably disappear by the beginning of the next book...

I think I'll probably try to do a whole series of these because, as I say, they beautifully combine my love of literature and fashion and they make me happy etc. You can see the first Bond Girl post I made - for Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale - here.

charcoal wool duffle coat from Uniqlo / grey flecked midi skirt from the York branch of TKMaxx (£20)

I think I mentioned in a post last week that I couldn't stop lusting over charcoal coloured clothing at the moment. Well, I think the obsession is here to stay, all winter at least. These are the latest additions to my closet - a beautifully soft and cosy charcoal coloured wool duffle coat from Uniqlo, and a woolen charcoal midi skirt. I can't wait to style these with snuggley scarves and booties in the colder weather. Weirdly enough, the summer seems to be back for round two, and I spent yesterday wearing short shorts and a t-shirt and blissfully reading a James Bond novel in my garden. We even had a BBQ and some beers; I can't believe it's October! The weather is back to its damp, grey usual today though, so I'm sure I'll get a chance to wear these soon. The skirt really reminds me of the wonderful ones from the Fall/Winter Ulyana Sergeenko collection, and I'm really hoping to lay my hands on a few more in a similar style this winter, have any of you come across any good midi skirts recently? What are you lusting after for this winter?

Kinda feeling a bit sorry for myself today: I have a broken laptop and job hunting fatigue, I'm working a lot for what seems like no money, I seem to have somehow injured my arm which has massively swollen up (?!) and is incredibly painful, and to top it all off it's my 'ladies' time of the month. I just want to curl up in bed with my new Bond book (Moonraker, it's awesome), a cup of tea, and lots and lots of chocolate. And I want to do that snuggled in this adorable cranberry coloured aran knit jumper from Zara, slouchy house pants from Uniqlo, and slippers from Muji. I can't get this jumper for love nor money though -- it's not on the website and my local Zara doesn't have one in stock. Does anyone know if they've sold out for good? I will be sorely disappointed if they have...

Today has been a rather lovely and relaxing day, just what I needed after a rubbish week of having the flu and feeling grotty. My brother is back from university for the weekend and my mum cooked a huge (vegetarian) Sunday roast with all of the trimmings, followed by the most delicious banana & jam sponge cake. I feel so full, I might pop! After dinner I decided (for some unknown reason, considering how much food we'd already had) to try my hand at making French macaroons, and the result - to my great surprise - was excellent. I decided to go with the standard vanilla recipe and not be overly adventurous, considering it was the first time I've made them, but they're made a little more interesting with the white chocolate filling. We had them with our afternoon tea, and everyone (especially my brother who ate nearly all of them) agreed that they're lovely. Well done me, I guess!

As you can probably see from this photo, I've been messing about with my Dad's DSLR camera all afternoon, because I'm considering buying one for myself. For one thing, I think it would certainly improve the overall quality of this blog, and for another, I'm starting to need one whilst undertaking freelance journalist work. At any rate, I loved using this Nikon SLR. The picture quality seems amazing to me, I suppose it would considering I usually just snap away on my iPhone... Do any of you readers know about cameras and/or photography? Could you recommend a good DSLR to me?

So anyway, would you like the recipe? Yes? Well here it is (on a fancy recipe card I made just for you guys). I apologise to all my American readers, because I'm too lazy to work out the US measurements/oven temp for you, if you really want to make them though, I'm sure you'll figure it out :)

I returned from the swimming pool to find a Pottermore email, informing me that I could proceed into the BETA site and try it out. I could hardly contain myself, it was SO EXCITING. I've been sitting here playing it now for about 5 hours, and it is absolutely amazing. J K Rowling and her team have really outdone themselves, the design is beautiful and the game is really fun and interactive. I can't wait until it's open to the public in October! The site is under so much traffic though that it's down at the moment (*cries*) so I've spent my time waiting for it to go back up making this fashion set for the house I was sorted into, Hufflepuff!

I really wanted to post some screen shots of the Pottermore artwork, but I don't want to spoil the surprise for anyone who doesn't have early access or who hasn't gotten in yet. If any of you want to add me, my username is StarFlight140, see you in there!

Rebranding

Hi all, as you might have noticed if you've visited this blog today, a few things have changed; Subject of Style no longer, I am now Foxtrot Echo November. If you're still visiting the old URL (subjectofstyle.blogspot.com) you will be redirected to the fancy new one: www.foxtrot-echo-november.com. I don't know how long the redirecting will last though, so please remember to bookmark! And yes, I splashed out and bought my very own domain.

'Why the name change?' you may ask (or you may not, probably the latter). Well, I chose the name Subject of Style for this blog a long time ago now - a long time before I even started writing on it - when I just wanted an account with which to follow and comment on other people's blogs. Since I've started taking this a bit more seriously, I've been pondering a new title but had yet to settle on anything. After a conversation I had with Bob about the phonetic alphabet the other day this one hit me, and seemed perfect. I'll try it out for a few weeks, and then - depending on feedback - we'll see if it sticks. I hope you like it :)

Fall/Winter Basics

Since Robin and I moved house, I've spent a good few evenings desperately trying to refine my wardrobe. I've sent lots of things to charity, and I have a small pile of things waiting to be altered. I love clothes and I love shopping, but when your wardrobe it too full and messy you forget about what's in there and beautiful pieces are left unworn for months and months, so I figured it was time to resolve this problem and downsize. First to go was everything I haven't worn in 2 years or more, closely followed by everything of questionable quality (sometimes Primark crap is just too tempting), and lastly went all of those things that I sort of like but that make me look too much like Avril Lavigne in the Complicated video (tartan ties and pink sequinned sneakers I bought when I was 13, still lurking). I am left with a much neater - and much easier to locate things in - wardrobe, I even managed to find space for some of Bob's clothes!

The newly found space is crying out to be filled with a few new autumn basics, especially in the knitwear department, and of course, I'm getting on that right away... I started with ordering a few of these men's woolen jumpers from Uniqlo (middle far right). I chose the olive green and the charcoal grey, but since they've arrived and I have been so thrilled with them, I am also considering ordering them in the navy and the black. They look so great with a shirt or turtle neck underneath in the colder weather, or over a dress/with shorts in these transitional autumn months. I am also searching for the perfect pair of black skinny (but not too skinny) jeans, does anyone have any suggestions?

As for the more indulgent additions I want to make, I have really wanted a good charcoal coloured coat for a few years, and spotted this wonderful Laura Ashley duffle (bottom middle) in Harper's Bazaar October issue that I think would be perfect. I saw this leather Fossil backpack (center) in the window of a store across from my work, and have been thinking about it everyday since. At £188 it really would be splashing out on something I really don't need (I have so so many bags already) but it's just so lovely, and I think it would become an instant everyday favourite, so maybe I'll save up? Lastly, I'm desperate for new glasses. I got a new prescription a few months ago, and some cheap thick black frames to tide me over because I couldn't afford anything nicer. I really need a thinner, lighter pair for everyday use -- if I could afford them I'd get these tortoiseshell ones from Bulgari (top far left). Well, I can dream.

Ulyana Sergeenko: Fall/Winter 2011

Wow, wow, wow. I was totally speechless when I first saw this collection from Russian designer Ulyana Sergeenko, the red velvet, grey wool, and white fur reminds me of both In the Company of Wolves and Anastasia. I want to book a winter trip on the trans Siberian railway and take a few suitcases filled with clothes like these, so I can swan about in the snow looking like a princess. I have a huge full circle midi skirt from H&M trend which really reminds me of some of these styles, I think I might have to dig it out. I'd definitely like to try it paired with a thin wool jumper and some red killer heels. I love that these are all such classic pieces, remember what I was saying about the new Margaret Howell collection? I'd love that red velvet dress forever if only someone would buy it for me... One last thing, the styling of these shots is brilliant no? I love the bare floorboards and delicate floral wallpaper.

This is actually the first September I haven't been going back to school/college/university. Gosh, it feels so so scary. I feel a bit left out in the wilderness to tell the truth -- my finishing university has coincided so neatly with the collapse of the British job market. I've sort of been left scrabbling around for overtime at what was previously just a job I did in the evenings and on weekends to help support me through my studies. Oh well, it's not all bad, and at least I have a job. My fingers are crossed for something better to come along soon, I won't give up hope just yet! At any rate, September still reminds me of going back to school, of new stationary and jumpers, and a new winter coat and boots. I don't have a favourite season, I just love change, and autumn - with all its golden leaves and ever darkening evenings - brings just that. If I were going back to school this autumn, this is what I would be wearing (I'll probably wear it anyway):

trousers / turtle neck / satchel / watch / pencil case / boots / crayons / notebook / blazer

I am absolutely in love with this bright green leather satchel from Asos, it would certainly add punch to a neutral black and grey autumn outfit. One of the things I will miss most about not going back to school is not having an excuse to buy new notebooks (my favourites are Molekine), but I'm definitely going to treat myself to a nice new diary for 2012, which might soften the blow. Five Easy Pieces: Alexia of Inmost Ordinary

This week's Five Easy Pieces come from Alexia, who writes and curates the wonderful tumblr blog Inmost Ordinary. In Alexia's own words, she is "a french dreamer, actress, singer, and aspiring dancer... I tell stories."

1. Handmade oilcloth wallet from Papa Pique et Maman Coud. I've always loved bold flowers prints, and whenever I take it out of my bag it cheers myself up. Also, it's very handy.

2. Moscot sunglasses, these are prescription sunglasses so it's both an essential and an easy piece.

3. Fleur d'Oranger from Fragonard. Fragonard is a famous perfumery from Grasse in the south of France. I like to think of myself as a yiddish and mediterranean person simultaneously, yiddish for the mind, mediterranean for the senses... Orange blossom is definitely - along with pine trees and basil - one of the best scent of the south.

4. Moleskine diary. I'm such a scatterbrain, I'm really trying to organise my life and rely completely on this beautiful diary for this. Besides I use it to jot down funny sentences I overhear or the seldom bright idea...

5. Kookaï sweater. I bought it during the summer sales and it has become one of my favourite garment, because it is so easy to wear... The neckline is so large it can reveal bits of bare skin and I think this represents perfectly our french conception of the sensual chunky knit, if you see what I mean.

Margaret Howell: Fall/Winter 2011

I think Margaret Howell might be my favourite ever designer right now. Yes, I said it. The slightly unwearable and definitely unaffordable clothes from the couture catwalks of Paris will always hold a special place in my heart (and in my 'if I ever win the lottery / become editor of Vogue' fantasy) but I feel like looking at Howell's collections, I could really really have them and wear them and love them for a very long time. I feel like these looks are attainable for me (as someone who doesn't earn very much money, or have a very rich family) at the moment.

I think the way people think about clothing and fashion right now has fundamentally changed, specifically in light of the recession. I remember shopping a few years ago and thinking "I have ten pounds, and I really really want something new to wear this weekend, so what can I get for a tenner?", and then I'd go and but some crappy shirt or a pair of jeans from Primark that got worn a couple of times before needing to be binned or sent to the charity shop. I would never ever shop like that now. Now, I think "will I want to be wearing this in three years time? What about five years? Is this the kind of thing that will last, is this an investment?". I like to think that the things I spend my money on will at least last me longer than a year, both in terms of the quality of the materials and the way they withstand wear and tear, and also in terms of the style and whether or not I'll grow tired of it very quickly or not.

That's why clothes like these in the Margaret Howell Fall/Winter 2011 collection are such a brilliant option at the moment -- the fabrics are hard wearing natural fibers, the accessories are stout leather shoes, boots, belts and bags: these things will last much longer and will better withstand cleaning and mending. There is a definite emphasis on the minimal and the utilitarian and even the pieces suited for occasions seem to have been designed with longevity in mind; see the classic black dress, easily dressed up or down, a look which can be quickly personalised with different shoes/scarf/jewelry/belt. The LBD is not the only old favourite reinvented in this collection, check the beige trench coat, tweed trousers, white shirt, breton sweater and khaki parka... there's a reason that these things never went out of style. The colours are pleasingly muted, making them a pretty safe bet for many seasons to come and the perfect canvas on which to place more up to date catwalk inspired accessories.

I just want all of it.

Today was a good day, mainly because it involved completely avoiding real life commitments, and going for lunch and to see a movie instead. We went to our favourite buffet - it's amazing because it serves great sushi, and it's all you can eat. I wish I could eat there every single day, but I'd weigh about fifty million stone (they have an ice cream machine). Rest assured we will be back to reality tomorrow (all though there have been musing over whether or not to go and see Planet of the Apes, yey!).

We went to see Super 8 after lunch and it was amazing. Seriously, best film I've seen in the cinema for a really really long time. In true homage to Spielberg's style, it had elements of E.T., Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Abrams threw in some of his signature lens flares here and there. Anyway, I won't pretend to be some sort of film critic because I'm not, but the acting is great (especially from the kids, wow), the plot is great, the sets and stunts are great, and the CGI is great. Also, Elle Fanning is in it, and she's wonderful, and the costumes are really awesome. Oh and it's really, really funny, and really scary in some parts too! I jumped so many times.

What I guess I'm trying to say is: just go and see it, right now!

If you read this blog often, then you'll already know about my slight obsession with unisex clothing. I love this range at Hickoree's, it reminds me of when I was staying in Vermont with my uncle one Christmas and we spent a lot of time in jeans and hiking boots and wooly jumpers... it was all very lovely. I love the clean, classic feel to all of Hickoree's choices, and the colours are all very neutral and easily mixed with one another. It would be the perfect place to source a capsule wardrobe from. I've fallen in love with this beautiful image from Juergen Teller's 'Goo-Sees' book (which you can find here). I used to have some baggy green cargo pants, which I literally spent every single day in, and fixed dozens of times, before they became too ripped and shabby (even for me in my grungy days) to be worn any longer. Seeing this photograph made me realise how much I miss them, I think I'll have to snoop around Gap men's department in search of a similar pair. This look is filled with nostalgia for a 14 year old me - sneakers, baggy trousers, knitted sweaters, beanie hat - and I think it may be time to revisit her.

Robin and I have been stuck at my parents' house in Durham these past few days, I didn't anticipate being here so long so unfortunately didn't bring my laptop, which is why I've been a bit MIA from blogger and tumblr. At any rate, it's been a nice couple of days (save for the terror of watching the London riots unfolding and spreading on the evening news) and we've gotten to spend some time reading, relaxing, and playing with my 8 year old cousin Jasper who is visiting from Kent. Highlights from the past few days include visiting the wonderful Forbidden Corner, Jasper dancing around me singing "you have too many shooooooessss, you have too many shoooooo-oooooh-essssssss, you have too many shoes!", and taking the dogs for long walks through the rainy green forest and along the riverbanks behind my parents' house. I've also read all of the September issues cover to cover, more on those in a later post...

I should be back in the blogosphere soon, but I've stolen my dad's computer for a few moments because I just had to share these wonderful prints from Anderson Design Group with you. I am desperately coveting the Houston Texas one, and the San Francisco one, for my bedroom walls (very reasonably priced, so perhaps I won't be coveting for long?). I'd love to be able to do this kind of design work, it it endlessly stylish and beautiful.

For my five easy pieces I have decided to feature my five choices on triangles, the hipster's favourite shape. Yes, they are over done, but I still love them. Everything that has caught my eye recently has been triangle themed so I thought it would be very fitting to base my pieces (or favourite randome things I like right now) on the wonderful three sided shape.

1. Nancy Straughan Printed Textiles. I had to bung a bit of shameless self promotion in here somewhere! Due to my obsession with triangles I have recently been creating a new collection for home wear using a few different triangle patterns. Here are a few pages from my sketchbook, I can see some of these motifs working well on a nice linen cushion perhaps?

2. Pavel Ripely. Wonderful illustrations created by designer and illustrator Pavel Ripely. Each design features a triangle motif that symbolises water, air, earth, and fire. They are also available on some great T-shirts.

3. Asos sweater. Great easy to style sweater from Asos, I'm sure it would look good for a few years and still go with everything in my wardrobe.

4. Bookou bag. Actually all Bookou products are gorgeous. Their bags and cushions are right up my street in terms of textile design, with their very simple designs and colour pallets.

5. "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye. I can't stop listening to this song, it initially caught my eye /ear due to the great video. I kinda want to cover my walls in pastel triangles now.

A Week (or so) in Pictures

The reason I've been a bit MIA recently is because we have been so so busy! Last week Robin was away at an interview for a couple of days, and then as soon as he got back we travelled to Glasgow for a wedding and a few nights in a hotel. It was lovely and just the break we needed. Unfortunately we're back to reality this week, with more job applications, interviews, and general uncertainty regarding how we're going to survive for the next couple of months... Amongst all the madness though, I have managed to make a new blog layout and header (my favourite form of procrastination), what do you all think?

So anyway, back to this past week, in order from top to bottom: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows at the Tyneside Cinema (which was amazing, omg, so many tears!) / reading US Vogue on the train to Scotland / beautiful buildings in Glasgow / a 50s American style milkshake bar / new clutch from John Lewis (totally and utterly in love with this!) with a Neal's Yard roll on relaxation remedy peeking out of the top / dresses I took with me to Glasgow (H&M for Wateraid, and just visible is one from Dorothy Perkins) / sticker from the Sunderland airshow on Sunday, unfortunately the light was quite bad so none of the pictures I took of the planes in the sky came out very well, but we had a really amazing time. This particular plane - the Vulcan - was incredibly scary but incredibly cool, and made me think of the film Threads (please don't watch this is you're a bit sensitive, because you'll probably wish you hadn't...) Robin was quite excited because he's a bit of a plane enthusiast.

Beautiful, textured - yet simplistic - fall 2011 collection from Steven Alan. Lots of lovely greys, greens and blues, accented with deep claret. I love a good mix of wool, velvet, felt and cotton for winter, and this collection definitely provides that. Every piece has a classic 'wear me forever' look about it, which is always a bonus (especially in a current shopping climate which seems completely disallowing of indulgent, unnecessary purchases). I'm dreaming about spending new years eve in that red velvet skirt and speckled grey jumper, or strolling through an autumnal toned park in that beautiful striped grey peacoat. I'm also considering purchasing this wool blazer (bottom row, far left) for Robin, very intellectual, don't you think?

In 2008, she has been selected for "FotoGrafia–Rome's International Festival of Photography", with a solo exhibition at Gallerati Gallery. In 2009 she took part in "FotoLeggendo Festival" and won the “Prix Exchange Boutographies” which is worth the participation to the "Boutographies Rencontres Photographiques de Montpellier 10ème edition”. I just adore these self portraits, the warm colours and the innovative use of windows and lighting is incredibly striking. I love the careful styling in each shot - the use of different stripes and patterns against one another, and against the flowers and trees surrounding the figures - makes each piece feel so timeless. Every element seems to compliment those around it, and yet each set up appears effortless and natural. I can't wait to see more work from her, what a very lucky and talented lady!

I was so excited when Fen asked me to put something together for Five Easy Pieces since I think it’s a great new feature, one I’m really looking forward to seeing more of! Keeping things along the same lines as Fen’s original post I decided on a few things that I’ve been carrying around with me a lot lately – hope all of you SOS readers enjoy!

01: Aviators from Peacocks, an affordable necessity now that the sun’s decided to show it’s face in England after all of that rain.

02: Handy little Mason Pearson pocket comb I nabbed in Fenwick’s (tucks neatly in the inside pocket of my jacket, never without it).

03: I’ll hardly ever be out without a little paperback somewhere in my bag. Currently splitting my reading between Virginia Woolf’s The Waves and Albert Camus’ The Plague.

04: Tie/belt, Topman sale bargain – £1. Very fun feel to wearing this and has made me think of what ARNYS is doing for their new Spring ’12 collection.

05: Ever endeavoring to inject a little gentlemanlyness day-to-day, my pocket handkerchief collection is growing. I really enjoy mixing different patterns and scales with my shirt and tie (and always have a spare at hand for lady companions and emergencies).

It seems that the months ahead will be filled with midi skirts, cable knits, pretty prints and delicate shoes. This Prada collection has been doing the blogosphere rounds this week, and I can see why, it's absolutely beautiful. I really like the way the photos have been staged as well, the use of the different chairs is very effective in showcasing the pieces. Margaret Howell is astounding me again - if I had to pick one designer to shop from for the rest of my life this would be it.

[Introducing] Five Easy Pieces

Good afternoon readers/followers!

Today I am -finally- introducing a new feature on SOS, something which has been in the making for a few months now and which I am calling Five Easy Pieces. I have devised this feature with the possibility in mind of being able to quickly, unusually and effectively interview people, an interview which will focus on five things chosen by the interviewee. These five things could be things used everyday (like mine here, we will get to that), fashion essentials, cosmetic essentials, work essentials, art essentials, keepsakes... the list goes on. What I love most about this format is that it is so open to interpretation!

I have several people lined up to take part - I'm hoping to interview a diverse range of people, from designers, to curators, musicians, bloggers, writers etc. - and I am super duper excited to see the results published here :)

I hope to release a new short interview every week, but to start things off here are my Five Easy Pieces for everyday. Basically, things I use all of the time, which make my life a little easier, and which I couldn't live without! -- 1: Timex military issue watch (arrived in the post this week, I am in love!) / 2: reading glasses / 3: Vaseline with aloe vera (in the classic tin, good for everything; sunburn, chapped lips, dry hands...) / 4: notepad for ideas, drawings and lists, at the moment I am using this one from Alnwick Castle which features a beautiful painting on the front / 5: iPhone (I like to keep in touch and need to stay on email for work)

If you do take part, feel free to interpret the layout of your post however you like (I obviously went down the photograph/photoshop route, but I'm open to suggestions! Somewhere else that I can't actually shop, but an excellent source of musing and inspiration nonetheless! Kitsuné's spring and summer collections were good, but this new autumn collection has really captured my attention. I love autumn clothing because it's all about texture; I can't stop dreaming about tartan, wool, corduroy, fairisle, cashmere and aran knits... The colours in this collection are wonderful (my all time favourite combination of camel, navy and grey), *le sigh*.

The absolute genius of pairing a denim shirt and shorts with a black tweed jacket and heels. Style Inspiration: Olivia Palermo

The beautiful Olivia Palermo photographed this past week by Stockholm Streetstyle. Her clothing choices are impeccable - as always - in this picture, I am so in love with the floral dress (Erdem, I think?) against those metallic spiked bracelets and chunky statement necklace. The tortoiseshell framed sunglasses is my favourite element though, I own at least 5 pairs of tortoiseshell ones myself but have spent the afternoon scouring the internet in search of some more similar to these; I love the vintage-esque cats eye shape. The best thing about Olivia though - and this has been said countless times before - is that her grooming is consistently top notch. Her skin is perfect, her hair is perfect, her make-up is perfect (she never ever wears too much), she's always in good shape, she always has a slight honey kissed tan... it's just not quite fair is it? Olivia is a good example of why every single thing you wear can look amazing if you just devote the appropriate amount of time to grooming and health! I feel inspired to drink 8 pints of water a day, deep condition my hair, and moisturise my skin now, so off I go...

UPDATE: I have just been informed by a Zara employee that this dress is, in fact, from Zara. WOW. Wish I hadn't missed it... *sob*

Robin and I spent this morning in Hexham; making the most of it as I was there for a job interview. We had tea in a café and I bought some lovely things in the National Trust shop. I've been looking for a good lavender perfume for a while now because it's one of my favourite scents, and this Yardley one is spot on so I bought it in both eau de toilette and solid form. The smell reminds me of my grandmother, so fresh and calming :)

Robin and I went to Tynemouth yesterday and spent a morning looking at second hand books and unusual junk at the market. The weather was perfect, so in true British seaside holiday style, we had fish and chips and then an ice cream on the beach, it was wonderful :) I wore my new leather sandals, which I love (I've been waiting for them to go in the sale for ages!) and they were super comfy. We both managed to find a book we really wanted - I got this Richard Yates novel and Bob got a John le Carré - and spent the afternoon sunbathing on a grassy hill overlooking the water. We returned home very happy and fairly tanned/red from the sunshine! What a lovely weekend.

Style Inspiration: Kirsten Dunst

My favourite celebrity look of the week. Kirsten looks stunning in new season Louis Vuitton (creatively directed by Sofia Coppola, so all beautiful, naturally). An attempt at recreating the look -- a sweet floral sundress, the hint of yellow in this one sets off the warm metallic of the Toast ballet pumps nicely. Because this dress has a much higher neckline (and some embroidery on the body) than the one Kirsten wears, I've swapped the simple gold chain for a classic gold watch, I think it would be too fussy to add a necklace as well but another metallic is needed to tie in the footwear. The Ray-Bans and the Louis Vuitton bag stay the same in my reimagining; in my humble opinion, things like this can't be faked, so start saving for the real deal folks. This look works because it is clean, simple and classic, so if you're trying to recreate it remember to keep it minimal and let the pattern of the dress fabric do the taking! In terms of make-up, the same rules of simplicity apply: use a sensitive skin face wipe and a light day moisturiser as a base, and steer clear from heavy foundations and concealers. A lick of mascara, light touch of blush, and smeer of vaseline/lip balm will be enough.

I am absolutely in love with this 'Maine Attraction' editorial, and when I can find the time to nip into the library, I'll scan the entire article in for you all to muse over with me. Give me Hunter wellies and orange rain coats, stat! Also, take me to Maine so that I may purchase everything from LL Bean and then go fishing and eat lobster...

a long weekend

Robin and I have been in Devon since Friday for his sister, Jessie's, wedding, which was absolutely wonderful. We had such a lovely weekend and have returned feeling very loved up and relaxed. We certainly benefited from some time away after all the chaos at the end of the university semester/year. I was snapping away with my iPhone a lot of the time, so this post is image heavy!

Over the course of the weekend (travelling and in bed), I read Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates, which is amazing. I think we will rent the film soon because we haven't seen it yet. Super high hopes after reading it!
Magazines, home made muffins, and a flask of coffee on the 6 hour train journey there. The flask is from IKEA and is one of my most favourite things, it makes me feel like I'm in an Enid Blyton Novel. Also, trains are ever so romantic.
Wedding attire: Zara dress and Peacocks linen jacket (plus trout put face).
Absolutely beautiful place settings and decorations at the tables, I was in love with the tiny jewels scattered everywhere.
Robin's button hole flower -- he wore a H&M shirt and jacket, and a Blake's black silk tie.
Strawberries and Devon clotted cream; so so yummy.
I wore my new clover patterned shirt on the Sunday we were there, which we spent having pastry and coffee in Holsworthy, and visiting Robin's family which was lovely. Shirt from French Connection sale (with H&M man belt, and GAP men's jeans).

Unfortunately I don't have many photographs from the actual wedding ceremony itself, but safe to say that it was the loveliest one I've ever been to - uncharacteristically stress free and incredibly fun! Everything was perfect! You only get to see the one picture of me, because THIS is what happened in all of the others... More blogging soon when I am less tired & travel weary. Ciao.

P.S. I was introduced to an amazing factory store in Holsworthy in Devon while we were there, which I bought all kinds of exciting cosmetics at super cheap prices from. I was going to post them here, but there are so many I thought they deserved a post of their very own. watch this space!
